We are pleased to invite you to the first session of our Urban Development Webinar Series, titled "Changing our Future through Urban Planning." This webinar is jointly organized by the Kenya Property Developers Association and Architectural Association of Kenya - Town Planners Chapter (AAK-TPC).

Urban planning is a critical factor in addressing the rapid urbanization in Kenya. The Physical and Land Use Planning Act No. 13 of 2019 (PLUPA) and the County Governments Act, 2012 provide the foundation for development control tools aligned with the nation's socio-economic agendas such as Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). However, recent observations indicate a discrepancy in the application of these zoning laws, particularly in areas like Eastleigh, Kileleshwa, and Lavington, where conflicting comments on building heights have trivialized established guidelines.

Since the transition to devolved government, counties have become pivotal in managing urban challenges, from waste management to housing and transportation. The Urban Areas and Cities Amendment Act, 2019 (UACA) and the Kenya Urban Support Program (KUSP) are instrumental in enhancing urban governance. These frameworks emphasize the importance of municipal boards in urban management, advocating for capacity building to improve decision-making, resource allocation, and service delivery, leading to more sustainable and resilient urban environments.

The Urban Development Webinar Series aims to facilitate insightful discussions on urban policies and the management of urban areas in Kenya. This inaugural session will focus on the current state of planning and development in Nairobi City and explore potential solutions to the challenges stemming from urban planning.

Objectives:

  1. To outline the purpose and process of County Planning and Development Control.
  2. To discuss urban management policies in Kenya and their efficacy.
  3. To provide planning solutions for sustainable urban growth.

This is a FREE webinar and promises to be a pivotal platform for exchanging ideas and shaping the future of urban planning in Kenya. We believe your participation will add significant value to the discussion.
